week 0 - training facility

When you first wake up in your room, an announcement will play on the television.
You’ll be spending your first week before the game officially starts at a vast facility that has been completely submerged underwater. This facility consists of a central hub surrounded by four smaller spherical buildings. You can get to each subsection by either taking a shuttle or walking across a long glass tunnel.

(Yet.)]
Oh, it's you... [She hums. He's not someone she knows well, but she does know him marginally better than she knows anyone else here - and he had helped her, before.] It's a little strange, isn't it? How all of this happened so quickly... I wonder why.

[But Jack couldn't really detect any lies through the feed, for what that's worth, and had thus settled into the usual pattern of just going with the flow.
He'll walk over a little closer to where she is once she's acknowledge his presence though, leaning over to get a look at whatever she's reading or doing.]
What are you working on in here?
no subject
[It sounds unbelievable, but only because it's so outrageous. If they aren't taken to an island in a week's time, then they'll never believe anything else that's told to them while they're here.
She looks up at Jack, then at the sticks of wood she's kneeling in front of.]
...learning to build a fire without flint. If that man was telling the truth, then we'll be on an island soon. No matter how warm it is during the day, the chill from the sea will make it cold at night...

[And crouching down right away anyway because YEAH, HE CAN DO THIS!! Living on the streets may have been sorely unpleasant, but it's not like Jack ever forgot the skills he picked up there, even after he had moved on to the cozier noble life.]
Can I see those sticks?
no subject
Mayu should maybe be less surprised by this than she is, because this is Jack, who emerged from the Abyss and somehow wasn't a creepy ghost trying to kill her. But even so, she wasn't expecting him to just sit right down.
...ah, well. She passes the sticks over to him.]
Umm, go ahead...
no subject
While working, he chats amiably.]
It's easier if you have three pieces of wood and some twine. Rocks, too! Even if it's not flint, you can still use them to get some embers going. Any one will do, really—
[AND BAM it takes very little time for Jack to manage a spark. If there had been any tinder, they'd have a fire!]
Ah! There we go. If you get the angle right, it doesn't take much time at all.
no subject
[Only time will tell. Mayu, for her part, wants to learn to do this with as minimal a selection of tools as possible so that if something does happen to keep them from having more than the very basics, they'll still be okay.
She nods thoughtfully when she sees the spark, and holds out her hands.]
May I try it again? [Ideally, since they're partners, they'll stick together, but she doesn't want to get too dependent on him and wind up in a bad situation if he's not around for whatever reason.]
no subject
It sounds like our supplies will be limited, initially. ["Initially" because there's always the possibility of getting sponsors, but Jack doesn't really want to rely on that either, even though he knows how to appeal to a crowd.]
Try keeping it held at a bit of an angle - just the slightest one. It helps with the friction.
no subject
She and Jack will just have to give them a good show.
She works with the sticks once, and nothing. Twice - nothing. But third time's a charm, and when she gets the angle just right, she's rewarded with a spark. She turns her attention to Jack with a smile.]
I did it..! It's all thanks to you...
no subject
Once she actually gets the spark, though, his expression lights up.]
Oh! Good work! [And then a briefly dismissive handwave.] All I did was give you a tip. I can give you more, if you'd like - I lived on the streets for a while when I was a child.
[While he wouldn't divulge that to anyone else, considering they're partners who won't need to kill each other to get home, Jack doesn't see any reason at all to plot against Mayu and is more open accordingly.]
no subject
[Yes, go on, praise her... or don't, because puffing up a maniac's ego is probably not a good idea. Mayu's smile widens as Jack continues speaking, even though living on the streets isn't... really... something to be smiling about...]
That would be... nice. The more I learn, the better for us both.
[She tilts her head to one side.]
We're partners, after all.
no subject
Exactly! [Though if the rules change midway or something, they sure are gonna have a rough time.]
What do you want to learn first?
no subject
Shelter... even if we manage to make fire, we need to be able to set up some kind of a shelter, too. Or else it might be difficult...
