When you first wake up in your room, an announcement will play on the television.

You’ll be spending your first week before the game officially starts at a vast facility that has been completely submerged underwater. This facility consists of a central hub surrounded by four smaller spherical buildings. You can get to each subsection by either taking a shuttle or walking across a long glass tunnel.

[Jack understands the logic behind that, and hands over the sticks without fuss.]

It sounds like our supplies will be limited, initially. ["Initially" because there's always the possibility of getting sponsors, but Jack doesn't really want to rely on that either, even though he knows how to appeal to a crowd.]

Try keeping it held at a bit of an angle - just the slightest one. It helps with the friction.

[ But luckily Cole doesn't know that at all, though he doesn't feel confident in the breadth of Jack's answer. He thinks people are good, but he also thinks that people get scared. He truly wishes he could hear like he normally could, since then he would know, but instead he just turns his attention downward as he fidgets a bit. ]

I hope so. If no one will play, then no one would have to be hurt.

It does. [They're words that sound as though they should be spoken with resignation - but they're not. It's a thoughtful sort of agreement. While she doesn't necessarily want to have to depend on sponsors, that is the easiest way back to her sister...

She and Jack will just have to give them a good show.

She works with the sticks once, and nothing. Twice - nothing. But third time's a charm, and when she gets the angle just right, she's rewarded with a spark. She turns her attention to Jack with a smile.]

I think that's the same for a lot of people. Let me look.

[He's pretty experienced with traps, though he's far from an expert -- he just knows what he needed to in order to survive. Even so, this is a familiar trap, and he checks over it.]

...Ah, here we go. This bolt here was too tight. It was setting it off.

[He'll take a tool and adjust that, then pull the trap to set it... and it stays as it is, open and ready.]

There! Now just drop something in it, but keep your hand high up.

It's Silver, actually. And that's as possible as anything else. Though that puts us in a very unfortunate position...

[Whoa, whoa there! Silver holds up his hands -- well, hand -- disarmingly.]

[Okay, excuse him a minute Tamaki, he's just kind of staring at you in confusion. What the hell is "anime"?]

Depends on how in-depth they are.

Aren't the melee weapons in a totally different building? The south one, I thought it was.

Well, you know what they say about eyes and what's better than one pair. [He puts his hands over his kneecaps and his feet tap the architecture, arrhythmically.]

They probably have a lot of cameras, though, so it evens out. And those pesky collars, for that matter.

[Rests her cheek on the surface while lost in thought, to the consternation of her masseuse who is trying to express that this position is getting in the way.]

I thought kidnapping was a crime. But of course you'd know better.

Chin up. Right now I wish I could be uncute like you. We need to stick it to them in every way possible!

[Reaching from behind, she draws herself up to spread her arms out on the edge of the pool. Her legs pull over a pool noodle and entangle with it underneath the water's surface. This exposes her knees to the air, and it seems she took the brunt of the impact on her shins - there are light scratches that Haruhi has shrugged off.]

Reality TV is so weird. I don't get how it can be popular enough for something like this to have funding. [This is because Haruhi is from the nineties in her AU. In the present day she would understand, as much as she'd resent it]

[She fiddles with her rice without actually looking at it, keeping her gaze casually on Mayu's face.]

There are more people here than I expected. I wonder if there's even time to meet everybody.

Nope!

[She grins with all her teeth. So white.]

If I knew how it was gonna turn out, what would the point be?

[Mayu shrugs, taking another forkful from her own plate before responding.]

Maybe, maybe not. Some people might not even want to meet everyone.

Oh. Well. Well good. [...yep, definitely embarrassing. But at least now he can imitate it - wait.]

Hey, hold up, nature boy... Where you gonna get a rope out there on asshole island? Izzat in our starter kits?

[because if not, it may not be as simple as demonstrated...!!]

My name is Craig. [As flatly as the rest of what he's said thus far.] And if they don't give us any rope I will have to improvise. That's what you do when you're in the wild. You improvise. I'll use one of my shoelaces.

[It's sometimes how it goes. Only for him though... still, he gets the meaning.

He doesn't laugh at the joke, but it's appreciated anyway.]

[Beat looks down the hall after that.]

I guess we might as well scope the place out though. You comin' wit?

[Haruhi takes a big drink of her soda.]

Yeah, it'd suck to annoy those people. We could get those wristbands like they have at conventions - red for "don't talk to me", yellow for "ask first", green for "please go ahead"...

[Holden nods; he's got that movie star look, though a little twitchy.]

Yeah. It's real nice to stretch your legs again, isn't it? And see the others whenever you feel like it. Might as well enjoy that part while it lasts. We have to find out whether there are any orderlies or whatever who are gonna get on our case. But since there are robots ticking around all over, the actual people in charge are probably somewhere else. They seemed pretty cozy on the T.V.

I'm not sure we have time for something like that.

[Especially if they really are expected to kill each other in just a handful of days.]

[ he sure does look excited, which is almost enough for second hand embarrassment just by being in proximity of the other.

However, this also proves a point about things not being exactly... fair? Maybe Souji is missing something here, but he's pretty sure some of these candidates are far more equipped than others for killing and surviving while at it.

Staring down at the smoking area that was once lit briefly with flame, he glances back to the younger man, sighing a bit. ]

Don't you think you should be happy only if you can get it to stay lit? It won't do you much good.

[ optimistic observer he is not, and if there is one thing Souji's good at, it's obsessing over all or nothing. ]

[ he spends the majority of the announcement staring at the television itself rather than paying attention to what is on it. Because, really, what is that and how is it showing a moving picture as if it's real?

Around the time the announcers whispers, Souji is trying to stuff his hand behind the back of the TV to see if there is anything worthwhile since he can't get his head behind there. It's only once the broadcast is over, that he peers around at the now blank tv screen and makes a face, arm still behind the TV. Suddenly he feels as if the opportunity to catch something back there is gone. ]

Did that weird guy actually whisper the k-word? [ WHAT IS THE POINT IF THE WHOLE GAME IS ABOUT THAT? ]

Shame, I like that one too. I did see a deck of playing cards though.... let's see.
